Sheldon Gearmotor Possible Replacement

I posted this message to the Yahoo Sheldon Group, and thought it might be of some interest to Sheldon owners here:

As some of you know I have a 1960 Sheldon MW-56-P lathe. This lathe uses a push button activated gearmotor to change spindle speeds. The gear motor opens and closes the sheaves on a model 3B Worthington All Speed drive connected to the spindle connected by a series of belts .

To this point there has been no known replacement motor for this drive. That being said there is...

I can't get the lead screw out of the apron. I can slide the apron to the end of the tailstock, but the it won't come off. Seems like the cylindrical worm gear will slip on the lead screw, but won't go over the smooth end of the rear lead screw. My question is how do I get the lead screw out of the worm gear.

Horton 6 " 34C chuck

I am trying to take apart a Horton 6" 34C chuck on my Sheldon 10" lathe. This thing comes apart different than those I see on you tube. It is stuck and I've tried everything that I know to take it apart. It has a rim that slides down into the chuck and I am soaking it in mineral spirits now to see if it will help loosen it. I got one of the cups that tighten the gibbs out,but the other two don't want to come out. I was hoping I could find a video on this, but to no avail. Has anyone out...

EXL56B Ball turning attachment advice

Lately I have found the need for a ball turning attachment for my EXL56B. So before I go reinventing the wheel or building one from scratch ( not my first choice) I ask if anyone here has successfully adapted or constructed one for a Sheldon. I have seen the made in India models on the web. Although they look capable I need one able to swing a radius of 2.5 inches. That may sound large for a 10 in swing lathe but the amount of profiling that I have to do is extremely small. Nothing that...

I just purchased a Sheldon EXL-56-P (EXL-24124) that I believe is in very good condition. Well oiled and all the major functions function. That doesn't mean it's perfect so I have a few things I would like to improve on.

1.) First up is the dials on the top-slide and cross-slide. From what I can find, they are supposed to rotate so you can set the 0 on them. Neither one turns. The cross slide had a VERY long screw in it (socket head cap screw, not a knurled one like show in the...

Hey,
Anybody else have a Sheldon/Vernon vertical milling machine?? Art deco in appearance. Originally made to be the crossover machine between a jig borer and a mill. I have had mine for close to ten years and love it. Since I am strapped for space and do mainly smaller stuff I don't have room or need for a Bridgeport. Fred

Early Sheldon 10 inch.

I began this post in a different forum, not realizing this Sheldon forum exists.

I got hold of an early Sheldon 10 Inch which is listed in a brochure as Model 1020. A relatively standards convention is that the 20 refers to the working capacity. As mine is 26 as opposed to 20, I am thinking the model is actually 1026. The serial number is L253 making its date of manufacture sometime in late 1933 or 1934.

When I got the lathe it had nine thread gears in addition to the gear that was...

I picked up a Sheldon ten inch lathe. It was in pieces but appears complete but the for flat belt. This appears to be the older model (I think it is 1020) with the motor behind rather than above. Three speed screw cutter. I am fairly certain there is a complete set of cutting gears for it. They are still at the seller's house. Will post photos later.

Thanks a lot for your prompt interest to my first post on this lathe. The information was helpful as well as the links to OWWM.

I have this lathe back together to check its operation and find that the near bushing on the head-stock will need to be replaced in order for the lathe to be usable. I have found a source(s) for standard size bushings but I do not know if this one is standard. Does anyone know?

I am having difficulty in getting the spindle clear of the head stock. I can move the...

I will try and post some pictures of my B6 Sebastian lathe. Some people wanted to know about the gearing levers. The two on the circle are on the high-low speed and the one on the top is for the individual speeds in the range. I was given this lathe a few years ago for moving a semi trailer. Has 8" three jaw,4 jaw ,armstrong qc too post, few tool holders, set of Harding 2J round and hex colletts. It did not look this nice when I got it. Not to good with computer, hope this works.
